Early Signs of Stomach Cancer You Shouldn't Ignore
Stomach cancer often develops quietly, behind symptoms that are easy to dismiss as ordinary indigestion. Knowing which symptoms deserve a closer look — and an endoscopy — can make the difference between early, curable disease and a late diagnosis.
Why stomach cancer is often caught late
Early stomach cancer rarely causes dramatic symptoms. Instead it produces vague, common complaints — indigestion, mild discomfort, feeling full quickly — that are easy to attribute to diet or stress. This is exactly why persistent upper-abdominal symptoms, particularly in people over 40, deserve assessment rather than repeated courses of antacids.
Warning signs to act on
While most indigestion is harmless, the following symptoms — especially if persistent — deserve prompt assessment with an endoscopy:
- Persistent indigestion or heartburn that does not settle
- Feeling full quickly when eating
- Vomiting, or vomiting blood
- Black, tarry stools (a sign of bleeding)
- Loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss
What to do
Most indigestion is harmless, so there is no need for alarm — but there is good reason to get persistent or alarming symptoms checked with an endoscopy, which is a simple, decisive test. Early diagnosis is the single biggest factor in a good outcome for stomach cancer.
