5 Early Warning Signs of Colon Cancer You Shouldn't Ignore

SVMedically reviewed by Dr Sandeep Kumar VermaGI, GI Oncology & Bariatric Surgeon

Colon cancer is one of the most curable cancers when it is found early — and one of the most dangerous when it is ignored. The challenge is that its early signs are easy to dismiss. Here are five you should never overlook.

1. Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding

Bleeding is the symptom most often wrongly blamed on piles. While piles are a common cause, rectal bleeding can also be the first sign of colon or rectal cancer — and the only way to be sure is to have it properly assessed.

2. A persistent change in bowel habit

New, ongoing constipation, looser stools, or a change in the calibre of your stool that lasts more than two to three weeks should be investigated, especially if it is unusual for you.

3. Unexplained tiredness or anaemia

A slow-bleeding tumour can cause iron-deficiency anaemia long before any other symptom. Persistent, unexplained fatigue — particularly with pale skin or breathlessness — warrants a blood test.

4. Abdominal discomfort and 5. unexplained weight loss

Ongoing cramping, bloating or a feeling that the bowel doesn't empty, and any unexplained weight loss, are red flags that justify a specialist review and, often, a colonoscopy.
