Is Mesh Safe for Hernia Repair? An Honest Answer
If you have searched about hernia surgery, you will have seen worrying headlines about mesh. It is a fair concern, and it deserves an honest answer. Here is what the evidence actually says about mesh in hernia repair.
Why mesh is used
A hernia is a gap in the abdominal wall. Stitching the gap closed under tension has a relatively high chance of the hernia coming back. A mesh reinforces the area without tension, dramatically reducing recurrence — which is why mesh repair has become the standard of care worldwide.
What about safety?
Modern surgical meshes are well tolerated and designed to become incorporated into the body's own tissue, providing permanent reinforcement. Serious mesh-related problems are uncommon, particularly when the right mesh is chosen and placed correctly by an experienced surgeon. The much greater risk for most patients is leaving a hernia unrepaired, which can enlarge and, occasionally, become an emergency.
Is mesh always needed?
