Recovery After Hernia Surgery: What to Expect Week by Week
Recovery after a modern hernia repair is usually quick and straightforward. Here is what to expect, week by week, so you know what is normal and when to take it easy.
The first few days
Expect some discomfort, bruising and swelling around the incisions, well controlled with simple painkillers. Walking and gentle movement are encouraged from day one and help recovery. After laparoscopic repair, most people with desk-based jobs feel ready to return within a few days to a week.
The first few weeks
As the days pass you will feel steadily stronger. A few simple principles help the repair settle well:
- Gradually increase your walking and daily activity
- Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise while the repair settles
- Keep the wounds clean and dry as advised
- Resume driving once you can do an emergency stop without discomfort
When to contact your surgeon
Contact the team if you develop increasing pain, redness or discharge from a wound, a fever, or a new bulge at the repair site. These are uncommon but should be checked. Otherwise, follow your specific guidance and attend your follow-up appointment.
