What the procedure involves
After a bowel-cleansing preparation, the colonoscopy is performed under sedation for comfort. A thin, flexible camera examines the entire large bowel. Any polyps found are usually removed during the same procedure, painlessly and without any cut, and sent for examination. The procedure itself typically takes 20–40 minutes.
After the colonoscopy
Most people recover quickly and go home the same day. The findings — and the results of any polyps removed — determine whether any further treatment is needed and when your next colonoscopy should be. Removing polyps significantly lowers the future risk of colon cancer.

Is a colonoscopy painful?
No. Colonoscopy is performed under sedation, so it is comfortable and most people remember little of it. The most demanding part for patients is usually the bowel-cleansing preparation beforehand, for which clear guidance is given.
