Obesity and Type-2 Diabetes: Understanding the Link
Obesity and type-2 diabetes are so closely linked that doctors sometimes speak of 'diabesity'. Understanding the connection explains why, for some patients, treating the weight can transform the diabetes.
How weight drives diabetes
Excess body fat, particularly around the abdomen and inside the liver and pancreas, makes the body's cells less responsive to insulin — 'insulin resistance'. The pancreas compensates by making more insulin, until it can no longer keep up, and blood sugar rises. This is the core process behind type-2 diabetes.
Why losing weight helps so much
Because weight is a key driver of insulin resistance, losing weight can substantially improve blood-sugar control — and, in some people, lead to diabetes remission. Even modest, sustained weight loss helps; larger, durable weight loss can be transformative.
Where surgery fits in
For selected patients with obesity-related type-2 diabetes, metabolic (bariatric) surgery produces major, durable weight loss and a powerful effect on blood sugar — often improving diabetes within weeks. It is an option decided together with your diabetes physician, as part of a complete metabolic-health plan, not a replacement for good diabetes care.
