What the Whipple's procedure treats
The Whipple's procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy) is used for cancers of the head of the pancreas and the 'periampullary' area where the bile and pancreatic ducts meet the intestine. For these cancers, when they are detected before spreading, it offers the best chance of cure.
What the operation involves
The operation removes the head of the pancreas along with the adjoining part of the small intestine (duodenum), the lower bile duct and the gallbladder, and sometimes part of the stomach. The surgeon then carefully reconstructs the digestive system so that bile, pancreatic juice and food flow normally again. It is precise, demanding surgery.
Why where you have it matters
The safety of the Whipple's procedure is closely tied to how often the surgeon and centre perform it, and to the support available for recovery — intensive care, interventional radiology and endoscopy. This is why it should be done in an experienced, high-volume centre.
