Preparing for a Colonoscopy: How to Get the Bowel Prep Right
The most important part of a colonoscopy is the preparation — a clean bowel lets the doctor see everything clearly. The prep is the part patients find most demanding, so here is how to get it right.
The days before
You will usually be asked to switch to a low-fibre diet for a day or two and to avoid certain foods (such as seeds and red or purple foods). Keep well hydrated. Tell the team about your medications — some, such as iron tablets or blood thinners, may need to be paused.
The bowel preparation
The bowel prep is the most important step — and the part people find most demanding. Getting it right makes all the difference:
- Take the prescribed bowel-cleansing solution exactly as instructed and at the right times
- Stay close to a toilet once you start — the prep works quickly
- Keep drinking clear fluids to stay hydrated
- Aim for the goal: your motions becoming clear and watery
On the day
The colonoscopy is done under sedation, so it is comfortable and you will remember little of it. It usually takes 20–40 minutes, and any polyps found are removed at the same time. Because of the sedation, arrange for someone to take you home and rest for the remainder of the day.
